I'm revisitng my minotaur model currently. He was previously around 2k tri's with mirrored UV's with a 1024 color and alpha.
Most of the work will be done in ZBrush, however, to start with I've changed his UV's such that nothing overlaps and I've added a fair bit of geometry in important areas. He was original created to be rather low poly and less functional with facial animation and the like. I've also removed the alpha'd areas as I no longer feel they're conducive to the look I want for him. I plan to bulk him up even more than he already is and fix a few of his anatomy issues. Here's a wired shot showing some of the new geometry.
I've done a bit of sculpting so far -- nothing too detailed. He's up to roughly 80k poly's at this point in the sculpt and I'm mostly fleshing out muscles and fat. I've done a little bit almost everywhere but no area is 'complete' by any means. He'll probably need another subdivion or two before I get into any finer details.
A brief update. Some muscular work. Too lazy for a thumb XD.
another not so huge updat here. I've reworked the legs a lot to closer match a bull's legs, though they're still a hybrid. In any case he now has ankles! I'm sure he's happy about that. I also did a bit of work with teh snout. I reshaped teh nose a bit and worked the mouth over a lot. Added some muscular and fleshy areas to teh face in general and put the bumpiness around the base of the horns. Still haven't actually touched the horns themselves though. Anyway, here he is:
Been a while since I updated...busy and stuff, you know. In any case I can barely recall all the things that have changed...well let's see: I added lots of hair for the legs, chest, and tail. I also did a bit of work on the musculature all over. I believe I bulked up the upper body, made the lower legs thinner, fixed some knee cap weirdness (I noticed it was very small), bulked up the forearm and changed some of the muscles there (mostly around the elbow), did most of the detail on the hands like finger nails and lots of wrinkles and some finger print type stuff. That might be about it...hard to say because it's been so long. Anyways, here he is!
A minor update here as it's only been a couple hours. I went ahead and did some work on teh top of the hands, though I think it needs a bit more (in addition to the overall skin I need to do). Haven't done any veins anywhere yet, but rest assured they'll be there. I also detailed out the hooves, horns and snout a bit. I added a bit more muscle and fat to the face as well. I think I tweaked a couple other areas in minor ways, but nothing really worth mentioning. Some of the details were hard to see with the sculpey material I've been using thus far, so I switched to matcap gorrila for this! Anyway, here ya go!
Ok, so for this update I smoothed out and essentially erased all of the upper body hair to do it slightly differently. I then made a new layer for the rough rocky skin. I had been meaning to play with layers for a while but this was the first time I got around to it. It worked out quite well though this was as it turned out I wanted to tone down the bumpiness of the skin to about .67 of what I had done so that was easy to do. I then redid the upper body hair on it's own layer. I also performed some very minor tweaks here and there, gave him some nipples, and that's about it! Here are the turn arounds and a few close ups. About time to start polypainting now!
Okay, so I painted a bit. Mostly it's very similar to what I had before, but a bit darker and of course I opted for chest hair this time. I think a lot of the chest hair will have to be brought out in the spec map..well all the hair. I didn't touch anything below the waste (below the waste is the previous texture fitted to this model -- I used texture > color to start things off), but I'm sure considering the normal mapping and spec mapping (the original had only color) I'll probably blend that to a more broad color and concentrate the highs and lows in the spec as well as the normal map from the sculpt I've done. This is probably not the best way to show off what I've done in the painting process, but I was toying aorund and certainly think it looks cool, lol! Sort of looks color penciled to me. In any case, you can see some of what I've painted and the cavity detection really brings out the sculpting! I may do a bit more painting in ZBrush, but more than likely I;ll just head right into photoshop for the finer details since I mostly just laid out skin tones and such here. I probably shouldn't have redone teh tatoo (not shown) as I'll likely have to redo it yet again in PS! Sorry, no thumb -- too lazy :p
